Did you know that fine motor skills are the foundation skills needed to eat, write and help with manipulation?  So, what are fine motor skills?  Fine motor skills utilize the small muscles within our hands which allow for movements of the hands and wrist.  Fine motor skills are essential for developing the following skills.

  • Handwriting
  • Tying shoes
  • Using scissors
  • Turning door knobs
  • Zippering and unzippering
  • Buttoning
  • Picking up coins
  • Typing
  • Using keys
  • Eating
  • Cooking

Early childhood is an ideal time to focus on fine motor skills as these skills are needed throughout life.  It is our job as parents, teachers and therapists to give children the opportunities to develop these skills.  So grab a box of Lincoln logs and starting building a log cabin or whatever else your child can imagine.

You can purchase your own set of Lincoln logs on amazon.
